European Far-Right Setting the Public Agenda, Study Reveals
Mainstream political parties are more and more allowing the far right to set the public discourse, as per a recent research carried out in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Academics found that this phenomenon has inadvertently benefited radical parties by legitimising their viewpoints and disseminating them more widely.
Analysis Based on Two Decades of News Coverage
The results, released in the European Journal of Political Research, utilized an automated text analysis of over 520,000 articles from six national newspapers.
Capital-based scholars noted that as the radical faction moved from fringe issues in the 1990s era to central subjects like integration and migration, mainstream parties progressively adapted their messaging in reaction.
This adjustment boosted the spread of these ideas and signaled to the electorate that such stances were acceptable.
Implications for Democracy
"Political communication by mainstream political groups plays a central role in the electoral success of the radical right," stated a expert in political behavior participating in the research.
"This factor has been underestimated," she added.
The impact was noticeable even when mainstream parties were condemning the radical faction. "You're still giving them attention," the expert remarked. "The main point is that because we live in such a battle for attention, this focus is crucial."
Mainstreaming Effect Across the Continent
While the study was centered around the German context, this mainstreaming phenomenon is likely to affect countries across Europe.
"You see this a lot in European media," explained another researcher. "Radical groups makes a statement and everyone begins discussing it for several days."
"Even if you're opposing it, you're echoing it," he added.
Toughening of Public Discourse
At certain points, leaders have also toughened their discourse to align with that of the radical right.
In a recently published discussion, a former German chancellor advocated large-scale deportations and urged them to happen "more frequently and rapidly."
Comparable examples can be observed throughout the continent, as elected officials from countries including the UK to the French Republic adopt the language of the radical right, especially on immigration.
This has created an feedback loop that would have been unthinkable a ten years prior.
Central Issue: Who Dictates the Narrative?
"{If you're a centrist political group and you are discussing cultural issues – immigration, assimilation – in a way that is dictated by the pace of the far right, that's the whole idea of agenda setting," explained a researcher.
Other political parties have gone one step further, seeking to copy the hardline platform of the far right, despite research indicates that this approach leads the electorate to vote for the radical faction.
Progressive Impact and Voter Awareness
The scope of information gathered showed that the influence of far-right parties had been progressive and had increased with the passage of time.
"Public perception doesn't change from day to day," commented a researcher. "But if you encounter this pessimistic narrative around immigration every second week, and it is being spread not only by radical groups but also, for example, by mainstream parties, then of course this storyline travels further."
Need for Established Groups to Carve Out Their Distinct Narratives
The study emphasized the necessity for mainstream political parties to carve out their own narratives, particularly on topics such as immigration and assimilation, instead of constantly trailing after the radical right.
"It's like a dance," explained one researcher. "When the leader is far-right and you're responding to them, you cannot decide which music should be heard."
