Woman Knifed in Birmingham Bus Stop Attack Dies
A woman who was stabbed in the neck during a random assault near a bus shelter in Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, who was 34, was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway street, right beside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 21:00 GMT Friday evening, West Midlands Police said.
The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday, facing charges for the violent incident.
He was previously accused of attempted murder but following the woman's death charges were upgraded to murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said officers would be around the city centre through Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who may have seen the accused, identified as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, athletic shoes and rucksack.
Incident Location
The stabbing happened near Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they classified it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Eyewitness Reports
An area worker, who works nearby, described paramedic and police activity when she finished her shift at about 22:00 on Friday.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, and said co-workers reported hearing a commotion at about 21:00.
"Many co-workers take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk fundamentally, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting to Birmingham quite frequently visiting his partner who lives in the city, expressing concern regarding the incident.
"It makes me worried about my partner," he stated.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked occurred, you know, it's terrible."
